In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Caterpillar Inc. recently announced a major initiative to prepare for the century ahead by focusing on its most valuable asset – people. The company has pledged $100 million over the next five years to help train and equip the future workforce with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving, tech-driven global economy.
Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Jim Umpleby said, “We are excited to celebrate Caterpillar’s centennial with this investment that will empower the workforce of tomorrow. This pledge reinforces our commitment to building a world where technology and human creativity can work hand in hand to create a more resilient workforce. Together, by empowering individuals with the skills and resources they need to thrive, we can make that world our reality.”
Caterpillar Chief Technology Officer Jaime Mineart added, “As an industry leader, Caterpillar understands the urgency of preparing the next generation with the capabilities required for the jobs of tomorrow. This pledge, our first of its kind, reflects our dedication to collaborating with our global stakeholders to devise the best training solutions.”
Caterpillar’s pledge is an appropriate response to forecasts such as the “Future of Jobs Report 2025,” which predicts a major shift in workforce requirements and the creation of 170 million new roles, largely driven by technological advancements in areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, automation, robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), and other advanced technologies, alongside essential soft skills.
The pledge is an addition to Caterpillar’s existing workforce development programs, including ThinkBIG, a paid, hands-on training program for future technicians, the company’s STEM outreach for students, and its Global Dealer Technician Challenge, which promotes careers in high-tech manufacturing.
As Caterpillar marks its centennial with global celebrations, it is also extending its impact through philanthropic donations from the Caterpillar Foundation to support community and sustainability efforts.
Caterpillar Head of Social Responsibility Asha Varghese said, “Whether it is Caterpillar investing in the future of work, or Caterpillar employees volunteering, the company’s culture has always been about supporting communities where its employees live and work. This ongoing commitment to serving communities helps create an environment in which everyone can thrive.”
