Walmart’s OnePay Launches New Credit Card Program With Synchrony
Walmart’s fintech startup, OnePay, announced it is introducing two new credit card options for its customers, marking a significant step in expanding its financial services. The initiative is being launched in partnership with Synchrony, a well-established issuer in the retail credit space, which will handle card issuance and underwriting starting this fall. OnePay, a venture Walmart co-founded with Ribbit Capital in 2021, will manage all aspects of the customer experience through its mobile app.
OnePay CEO Omer Ismail said, “Our goal with this credit card program is to deliver an experience for consumers that’s transparent, rewarding, and easy to use. We’re excited to be partnering with Synchrony to launch a program at Walmart that checks each of those boxes and will help serve millions of people.”
The new collaboration comes on the heels of Walmart’s split from Capital One, which previously served as the exclusive credit card provider for the retail giant. After ending the relationship early, Walmart has turned its focus inward, leveraging OnePay to take a more active role in the financial services it offers. By teaming up with Synchrony and, separately, Swedish fintech Klarna for buy now, pay later services, OnePay is choosing strategic partnerships to scale quickly rather than building all capabilities in-house. OnePay’s offerings now include debit cards, high-yield savings accounts, peer-to-peer payment tools, and digital wallets, working its way towards its goal to become a comprehensive financial platform for consumers often overlooked by traditional banks. The new credit cards will include a general-use Mastercard option and a Walmart-only store card. Applicants with lower credit scores will be considered for the store card if they don’t qualify for the broader Mastercard. Rewards for card usage have yet to be disclosed.

Donatos Pizza Unveils Fully Autonomous Store at Columbus Airport
Donatos Pizza has launched its first fully automated restaurant at John Glenn Columbus International Airport’s Concourse B. The store operates using robotics technology from Agápe Automation and Appetronix. The high-tech system features robotic arms that prepare fresh pizzas from scratch in approximately six minutes. Although Donatos has previously explored automation, this marks its first store capable of functioning nearly 24/7 without staff on-site, aside from restocking and cleaning needs. The airport unit, managed by HMS Host, is comparable in size to a shipping container. The technology offers precise ingredient portions, which helps minimize waste and lower food costs while also addressing labor challenges in unpredictable or hard-to-staff environments.
Donatos CEO Kevin King said, “It’s not a pre-made pizza — you can watch robots making your pizza. The robot arm grabs the dough, it gets it sauced, cheesed, and added pepperoni, if you choose, and put into the oven. Then a different robot arm takes it out of the oven, cuts it, slides it into a tray, and loads it into a locker.” King added, “We think of automation in terms of replacing highly repetitive tasks and things that humans don’t love to do. It does use less labor obviously, than a restaurant, but it’s perfect for an environment with uneven business patterns or that is tougher to staff. We think our labor focuses on mostly face-to-face interactions with guests in our restaurants.”

Donatos is planning to roll out two more autonomous outlets within the next six to eight months and is actively researching how automation could improve processes even in traditional store formats, such as automating the placement of pepperoni.
