Key takeaways:
-
DoorDash Air includes the routing, safety, merchant integration, and operational infrastructure required to run drone delivery at scale.
DoorDash has reached a major milestone in its push to expand autonomous delivery, earning Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration and launching DoorDash Air, its first-party drone program. The certification makes DoorDash one of just eight drone operators to clear the FAA’s rigorous process, which evaluates aircraft airworthiness, maintenance programs, safety procedures, and operational reliability. Built by DoorDash Labs, the same robotics and autonomy team behind ground delivery robot Dot, DoorDash Air will include an American-designed and built aircraft purpose-built for local commerce.
But DoorDash’s ambitions extend beyond building drones. The company is developing the infrastructure needed to integrate drone delivery into its broader local commerce network, from real-time inventory reconciliation and merchant handoffs to routing and safety systems. DoorDash says drones can help speed up mid-range deliveries, complement Dashers, and give merchants another way to reach customers without building their own delivery infrastructure. Its Autonomous Delivery Platform is designed to determine the most effective delivery method for each order, coordinating Dashers, drones, Dot, and autonomous delivery partners across a single network.
Why it matters:
-
By integrating human couriers, robots, drones, and autonomous partners into one system, the company is building toward a future where the delivery method can be matched to each order in real time.
