United Airlines has introduced a new wave of enhancements to its award-winning mobile app, designed to save travelers time and reduce friction throughout their journey. The updates arrive as the airline prepares for its busiest winter holiday season ever, with more than 10 million customers expected to fly. Together, the features are designed to make the app feel like a real-time personal travel assistant from curb to gate to baggage claim.

Among the most notable additions is Virtual Gate, which allows customers to monitor boarding progress, including which groups are boarding and how full the plane is, eliminating the need to crowd the gate. A new United Club recommendation tool suggests the closest and best options based on gate location and capacity, beginning at Chicago O’Hare and expanding to more airports in 2026. The app refresh also includes an upgraded, package-style real-time baggage tracker that shows where bags are at every stage of the trip.

The app delivers more personalized guidance than ever, offering tailored prompts for travelers using strollers or wheelchairs, reminders for required documents, and options for biometric boarding where available. Arrival features now provide live local weather, estimated arrival times, and step-by-step instructions for connecting to rideshare services from the airport.

United Airlines Chief Customer Officer David Kinzelman said, “The more information our customers have, the more confident they feel about their trip - and that’s particularly important during the holidays. The United app gives travelers personalized, real-time updates during their entire travel journey, helping our customers feel like they have a personal assistant guiding them every step of the way.”

United says the changes build on years of industry-leading self-service innovations, including personalized connection assistance with turn-by-turn gate directions, automatic rebooking during disruptions, enhanced bag recovery through Apple AirTag integration, and real-time weather delay explanations. According to the airline, more than 84% of customers already use the app on travel day, and early testing shows travelers value the transparency, time savings, and confidence these real-time updates provide, especially during the hectic holiday season.
