Chipotle Tests the “Autocado” and Augmented Makeline
Chipotle is advancing its automation efforts by testing two new technologies in select restaurants in California. The company introduced the "Autocado,” a robotic device that cuts, cores, and peels avocados for Chipotle’s signature guacamole. Simultaneously, the Augmented Makeline, which automates digital orders for bowls and salads, is also in trial. These initiatives are part of Chipotle’s push to improve efficiency through its Cultivate Next venture fund, which has invested in the companies behind the innovations.
“These cobotic devices could help us build a stronger operational engine that delivers a great experience for our team members and our guests while maintaining Chipotle’s high culinary standards,” said Curt Garner, Chipotle’s Chief Customer and Technology Officer.
Both technologies aim to streamline operations and reduce costs. For example, the Autocado reduces the time spent peeling and coring an avocado to just 26 seconds, Chipotle will use approximately 5.18 million cases of avocados this year.
In addition to saving time, the Autocado may reduce food waste and save Chipotle millions in food costs. The Augmented Makeline also aims to improve order accuracy for digital customers, who now account for 65% of Chipotle’s sales.
