ScanLife today announced a series of major enhancements to its mobile application that enable users to scan and share their shopping experiences via social media.

The new features enable users to scan a quick response code or any other standard barcode from products and connect directly to Facebook and Twitter, David Javitch, ScanLife director of marketing, told Loyalty 360.

There is a heart icon to indicate if the person scanning the product liked it. The app tallies the likes, similar to a Facebook page. The more likes, the more likely another person scanning the product is likely to buy it, according to Javitch. “It makes you feel like you are part of a broader, bigger community.”

If the code offers information (e.g., product details) that the user can’t immediately react to, connecting it to his or her Facebook page offers an easy way to retrieve and use the information at a later time, Javitch said. “This enables marketers to extend a mainstream platform. We’re connecting offline to mobile.

“Marketers have been looking for ways to amplify their brands for a long time,” Javitch added.  “Consumers who are fans and share the content can be rewarded for that.”

An analysis of more than 200 QR codes with thousands of scans that were generated from the ScanLife Mobile Engagement Platform found that 62 percent of the scans converted to further engagement (clicks or otherwise), with 95 percent of the codes driving at least some action.

“The new version of ScanLife turns its millions of active users worldwide into a social community, making it easier to discover the best content from QR and other format barcodes,” said Mike Wehrs, CEO and president of Scanbuy, the developer of ScanLife, in a prepared statement. “We have a very active and globally diverse user base, and this new app will enable them to easily discover and share what’s trending. We believe this opens a completely untapped space which intersects the physical, mobile and social worlds in which we live.”

The new features were launched in anticipation of the holiday shopping season, generally recognized as starting with Black Friday promotions.

To get people into the social spirit, ScanLife is running a “Like It to Win” holiday giveaway, enabling users to:

·       Scan any barcode or QR Code on products, print ads, websites and in-store displays

·       Click the heart icon on any favorite scans

·       Win from ScanLife Amazon gift cards to help make that ‘Like’ come true for the holidays
